ACROSS THE STREET!!
PORT CHARLOTTE -- The revamped waterfront Bayshore Live Oak Park will open to the public early next year, capping 10 months of work on the $4.5 million project.
The park, with new bathrooms, a pavilion, open-air stage and fishing pier will be ready for the public in February. It offers a spectacular view of the lower Peace River and upper Charlotte Harbor, Florida's second-largest estuary, and has a rich history, too.
"This neighborhood was the first pioneer settlement in the 1800s, even before Punta Gorda," said Linda Coleman, director of the historical division of Charlotte County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources. The seven-acre park, the result of a decade of land acquisition on the north shore of the lower Peace River, will feature a river walk that explores aspects of life for the first settlers here.
The park will feature two walkways, one along the river and a wider one near Bayshore Road. The south end of the park will also have a kayak launching area.
Getting land for a linear park on Bayshore took years, and improvements to the park will continue after the current project is finished.
The county, has for several years envisioned the Bayshore park as a key piece in the Charlotte Harbor community's redevelopment. Officials view it as a community focal point similar to Gilchrist Park on the Punta Gorda side of Peace River.
